What is it like to have an ultrasound?
If you have never had any ultrasound, or never had the type you are scheduled to have, you may have questions!
Ultrasound involves using an instrument, like a camera, over the surface of the body. A clear gel is used between the instrument and your skin, which eliminates air spaces and provides better quality pictures. This gel is warmed to body temperature for your comfort.
Ultrasound is usually painless, involving only some pressure on the area being examined. However, if you are already in a lot of pain, for example from a gallbladder attack or an ovarian cyst, you may find your ultrasound painful. Your technologist can often change their technique or pause for a few minutes so please speak up if you are in pain!
